Alessandro De Maddalena: shark researcher and artist

December 2009

Alessandro De Maddalena has organized a 5 days field course on sharks in Simonstown, South Africa (April 3 - April 9, 2010), in collaboration with the ACS Bicocca Association, University of Milano-Bicocca. He'll teach lessons on biology, ethology and ecology of sharks. His group will dive with Chris and Monique Fallows' Apex Shark Expeditions to observe great white sharks, shortfin mako sharks and blue sharks. No scuba qualification is needed.

The cost is  Euro 2230 for person, and includes:
- fly with KLM from Milano Malpensa to Amsterdam to Cape Town (April 3, 2010) and back (April 8-9, 2010),
- transport from Cape Town to Simonstown and back,
- 5 nights accomodation in Simonstown, at The Grosvenor ( www.thegrosvenor.co.za ),
- course on biology, ethology and  ecology of sharks
- 3 cage dives with great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias),
- 2 cage dives with shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) and blue sharks (Prionace glauca),
- possibility to encounter other marine animals (sea lions, penguins, cetaceans, etc.),
- on board light lunch,
- one or more preliminary encounters at the University of Milano-Bicocca.

They will fly from Milano Malpensa, but if someone is interested in different options, Alessandro De Maddalena can see what he can do. 
There is place for 11 persons. All subscriptions must be received not later than December 15, 2009.

The Sharks Calendar 2010 is now available. The calendar features 12 superb illustrations by Alessandro De Maddalena. Each page is a satin-coated prints on 170gsm high quality art paper, and the cover is a heavier 300gsm paper. The calendar has a hanger and white wire binding, and it is A3 size (that’s 297x420mm, or 11.69x16.54"). The calendar can be ordered from the publisher, RedBubble.

On sunday May 31, 2009, Alessandro De Maddalena gave a talk on sharks of the Mediterranean Sea at the Science Centre - Città della Scienza, in Naples, Italy, where an exhibition on sharks entitled "Squali - Predatori dei mari" is on display from March 13 to June 14, 2009. The talk covered biodiversity, research and conservation of the sharks of the Mediterranean Sea. The hall was packed with over 50 people.

May 2009

On tuesday May 12, 2009, Alessandro De Maddalena gave a talk on sharks of the Mediterranean Sea at the Museum of Nature South Tyrol, in Bozen / Bolzano, Italy. The talk covered biodiversity, research and conservation of the sharks of the Mediterranean Sea. The hall was packed with over 70 people.

February 2009

A new book, "Squali", the italian edition of "Sharks" by Miranda Smith, for readers age 9-12, has been published by Vallardi. It features the Foreword by Alessandro De Maddalena, who edited the text and updated the book contents for this italian edition. The book can be ordered from the publisher, Vallardi.
